Join Cub Scouts Today!
Cub Scout Pack 1344 serves boys in grades K-5 through fun, outdoor adventure, STEM and character development.
Most of our Scouts attend Cherry Run Elementary School in Burke, VA, but we always welcome new Scouts from nearby neighborhoods as well.
Read below to learn more about Cub Scouts! If you have any questions or would like more information, please fill out the contact form at the bottom of the page.

Beyond that, Cub Scouts provides:
- Ethical and moral character growth
- Citizenship training
- Opportunities for family fun
- Positive influence & role models
- Exposure to new interests and skills
- Outdoor adventure
- Fellowship & friends (for Scouts and parents!)
- Confidence, independence & resilience
And most importantly… it’s FUN! Just ask any Scout!

How is our Pack organized?
The Cub Scouting program takes place at two levels.
Your child will be a part of a Den, a small group of Cub Scouts in the same grade level. Each Den works on different, age-appropriate adventures throughout the year.
- Kindergarten – Lion Den
- 1st Grade – Tiger Den
- 2nd Grade – Wolf Den
- 3rd Grade – Bear Den
- 4th Grade – Webelos Den
- 5th Grade – Arrow of Light Den
* We suggest 6th graders and older check out Scout Troop 698 or Troop 1344.
All Dens, from Kindergarten through fifth grade, make up the Pack.
It’s totally OK to join at any age! Each year is a fresh start. In fact, we often find friends of Scouts join midway through their elementary school years when they hear the stories of how much fun they’ve been missing out on.
Who leads the groups?
The Pack is led by a Cubmaster and Assistant Cubmaster, and supported by the Pack Committee.
Dens are led by a Den Leader and an Assistant Den Leader, who are parents who step up as registered volunteers to implement the Cub Scout program.
Den Leaders often ask for other parents to take turns leading various meetings and events on a rotating basis, sharing their talents and knowledge with the Den.
Occasionally, we also have older Scouts from local Scouts BSA Troops who volunteer as Den Chiefs, helping the Den Leader run Den activities, and giving boys an older role model!
All adult Leaders are required to complete background checks and Scouting America’s Youth Protection Training, recertified regularly. Scouting events are not allowed to proceed without a minimum of two registered leaders present at any time.
What do Cub Scouts do?
A lot! Each scouting year is focused on earning rank for that year, achieved by completing a number of required and elective adventures for which Scouts earn belt loop awards. Additionally, we enrich the program with many Pack Events that tie into adventures, and create opportunities for families to gather and have fun.

When and where do we meet?
We host monthly Pack meetings for all Scouts, usually on Monday nights at St. Andrews Episcopal Church at 6509 Sydenstricker Rd, Burke, VA 22015.
Additionally, individual Dens meet at various times. Most Dens meet once or twice a month.
What are dues used for?
There are two types of dues: Scouting America annual registration dues, and Pack dues.
Scouting America dues are paid at the time of registration. These fund the overall Scouting program at a national, council, and district level, including staff, operations, materials, etc. This also covers insurance on Scouting events, events organized by the NCAC, and other council expenses.
Pack Dues are collected at the beginning of each scouting year. If you join later, dues will be prorated based on the date joined. These cover the operating costs for our pack, including the neckerchief and slide for each Scout, awards and patches for each Scout, camping fees, Den activities, and expenses for official Pack Events.
We strive to keep dues as low as possible while delivering an exciting and complete Cub Scout program.
Is there a required fundraising commitment?
No. Many of our families are busy with multiple activities and demanding careers. As such, our ethos is that dues should be sufficient to fund the program.
We do offer optional fundraising opportunities throughout the year that families can take advantage of to ‘buy back’ dues if desired. But we will not require you to sign up to sell popcorn in front of a grocery store!
What does a Scout need?
Beyond dues, the financial commitments are mostly infrequent expenses for uniforms.

What is my role as a Parent/Guardian?
When you join Scouting, you join as a family. Throughout the Scouting program you will work together with your Scout and help him along the way. Your Scout will be able to confidently move through the program because of your encouragement, help, and guidance.
Parents/Guardians are expected to come to the monthly Pack meetings for information. Additionally, some Dens require parents to attend Den meetings too.
Most importantly, your role is to help celebrate your Scout’s achievements each month that they have worked so hard to receive. Pack Meetings and events are all family-friendly, so please welcome siblings, grandparents, etc. to join you and your Scout.
How else can parents get involved?
The Pack belongs to all Scouts and their families, and to make it run smoothly, we need help from everyone! You are the ones that help make it all come together. Without volunteers, there is no Cub Scouts program.
Please assist Den Leaders and Pack Leaders by volunteering for activities when there is a need. We understand circumstances come up and you may not be able to help out with every activity and that is ok! It is not expected that you volunteer every time.
There are many different volunteer opportunities that come up throughout the year. You can help out with something that requires little time, such as helping with set up or clean up for a pack meeting, or you can help out with something that requires more time, such as running an event, being a Den Leader, or volunteering for a Pack Committee position.
Your time is valuable and any time that you can give us is greatly appreciated! By volunteering, you are giving priceless gifts to your scout, and his friends: the gifts of time, valuable memories, and positive examples!
Who sponsors Pack 1344?
Pack 1344 is chartered by the Burke Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department. They oversee our Cub Scout Pack and ensure a quality Cub Scouting program. In return, we help them with their annual open house by cleaning the exterior grounds prior to the event, as well as participating in the opening ceremony to start the event.
